Lucky

During the course of our wedding planning Mr. K and I had a really hard time deciding what song we would use for our first dance. The closest thing we have to a "song" would be "Such Great Heights" (by The Postal Service or Iron and Wine--we love both versions!) but it's not a great song for dancing (the Postal Service version is too electronic and the Iron and Wine version would put people to sleep!). We also didn't want to pick a song just because it seemed like a good first dance song. For example, I love the song "At Last" by Etta James--it's a beautiful, classic song and fitting for a couple that has had a 4.5 year courtship, but the song just isn't "us" enough to be our first dance song.

Last fall I heard "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz and fell in love with the song. It definitely has an island-vibe and the lyrics are just so sweet and happy! But again, it had the same problem as "Such Great Heights"--it's not a great song for dancing. Not that it's impossible to dance to, but Mr. K and I aren't the most skilled dancers--we need a song with a good dancing beat to help us out a bit!

In October Mr. K and I went to see Jason Mraz in concert. He played the song "Lucky" live with his opening act, Lisa Hannigan. I remember both Mr. K and I loving the song at the concert, but I somehow I promptly forgot all about it later. Well, just a few months before our wedding, I saw the music video for "Lucky" featuring Colbie Callait and I actually teared up while watching it (this is BIG, people! I am NOT a crier!)! The lyrics to the song are sooo sweet, and they perfectly describe us Kittens! Plus, the song is about a long-distance relationship (something we've had going for almost four years now!). And to top it all off, it mentions a rendezvous on a beachy island. It was the PERFECT song for the Kitten wedding!

How did you choose your first dance song? Is it a song you had planned on using all along or something that hit you during the wedding planning process?
